RABAT, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan authorities said on Tuesday that they have foiled smuggling of nearly 13 tons of cannabis in the northeastern city of Nador.
The Moroccan navy intercepted a Moroccan longliner carrying 518 cannabis resin bales weighing 12.8 tons, the Moroccan army said in a statement.
The longliner was taken to the port of Nador, and eight people, including a Dutch national, were arrested in this operation.
The statement said the seized drugs were handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for customary judicial procedures.
Despite efforts in the past decade to crack down cannabis farming, Morocco remains the world's largest producer of cannabis resin.
According to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime's World Drug Report 2016, Morocco ranked the first among 129 countries in terms of cannabis production over the period 2009-2014, followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon, India and Pakistan. Enditem
