Students build mindset for today's globally connected world through service-based trip

HERSHEY, Pa. (PRWEB) July 12, 2016

A group of 17 Milton Hershey School® students and six adult staff members is currently visiting Ghana as part of the School's international service/education and global awareness initiative. During the two-week trip, students and staff will travel to several different parts of Ghana and assist with various service-based activities with the local community.

"This trip to Ghana, and those like it, empower our students. The experience and memories they create will last them a lifetime, as will the lessons they learn about civic responsibility, leadership, ethics, empathy, and collaboration," said MHS President Pete Gurt '85. "Through this opportunity, our students are creating the global mindset they will need to succeed in today's globally interconnected world and workforce."

Students will participate in a variety of service-based activities while in Ghana. Activities will include planting shade trees on four new farms with the assistance of local farmers and staff of the Ghana Cocoa Board, also known as Cocobod. The more than 2,100 seedlings planted by students will help support the sustainability of Ghana's local cocoa farms. The group also will participate in an event with The Hershey Company and its partnership with Project Peanut Butter which provides malnourished children ready-to-use therapeutic foods.

While in Ghana, students will experience a new culture, navigate a new language and explore historic sites, all while developing a global perspective. The group plans to learn more about Ghanaian culture and traditions by touring the Manhyia Palace Museum, the former residence of Ashanti region royalty.

Students also will visit the Fosco Demonstration School in Assin Fosu. Milton Hershey School has partnered with the Ghanaian school through a distance learning program which links students in Hershey and Ghana through real-time, high-definition technology. The partnership is one of many that Milton Hershey School has built with organizations around the world to help its students gain a multicultural education.

As part of its 2020 Vision Strategic Plan, Milton Hershey School has made it a priority to create opportunities to cultivate strength of character by elevating global awareness and understanding among students. Through the Multicultural and Global Education program, students gain a better understanding of themselves, others, and the systems in which they live to build the mindset needed to operate in today's global workplace. There are four types of international trips available to MHS students: service; educational; language immersion and global summits.

During the 2015-16 school year, MHS students traveled to Iceland, Costa Rica and several countries throughout Europe as part of the program. International service learning and global awareness is an initiative for all MHS students to complete during their high school years. The goal is to empower students with worldly experiences to gain a better understanding of different cultures.
