MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. – Sgt. Maj. William Oldenburg retired after 30 years of service during a retirement ceremony and relief and appointment ceremony where he passed the sword of office to incoming senior enlisted advisor of Marine Corps Air Station New River, Sgt. Maj. Charles Metzger July 8.
The ceremony came just weeks after MCAS New River commanding officer, Col. Russell Burton, took command signaling a new change in leadership, now both at the officer and enlisted levels.
Oldenburg reflected on his experiences while serving, the friends he has made and the stories too embarrassing to retell, but focused on his time at New River and his admiration for the Marines, sailors and employees that make the air station run smoothly.
“It’s the efforts of the wonderful people who work here that make this place a community, not just a base,” said Oldenburg.
Metzger says he looks forward to working with the air station community and contributing to the efforts of Oldenburg.
“I look forward to being a part of this team and working for the people of this community and the Marines here at New River,” said Metzger.
Oldenburg served at the air station since April of 2014, ending a career dedicated to his family, country and Marines. Family, Oldenburg says, is what helped him through long deployments and tough times throughout his career.
“As I come to the end of this thing, you hear it all the time but, what got me here is family,” said Oldenburg. “To my family, children, my grandchildren, you are it. You are what got me here and I love you. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, Semper Fi.”
