Two Arab men have been charged by the Sharjah Sharia Court of First Instance for theft from a taxi driver. The two accused allegedly sprayed pepper in his eyes to steal.
The Asian driver works for Sharjah taxi company. According to him, the two accused got into his car at midnight and asked him to drop them off in Ajman.
The first accused, K.A., sat in the front seat while the second accused sat at the back. All of a sudden, the first accused sprayed pepper in his eyes while the second accused held his neck from the back. They then took his wallet and bank cards and fled the scene.
The driver soon parked the car and got out as his eyes were burning.
However, the first accused forgot his mobile in the car as the two men tried to escape. After his eyes had cleared, the cabbie drove to the police station and registered a complaint.
The two accused, who are in their early twenties, admitted to the presiding judge, Dr Yaqoub Al Hamadi, that they assaulted the cabbie and stole his wallet, but refuted that they beat the driver on the neck and chest. The two accused also denied spraying pepper on him.
The first accused asked the judge to issue the judgment while the second accused has presented written defence.
The court was adjourned to July 31 for judgment
