I'm not hiding, insists Nico Nel

Cape Town - Nico Nel is not hiding.

Netwerk24 found the storyteller at his home in Durbanville on Monday morning just as he pulled into the driveway in his Toyota Hilux bakkie.

“I was going to call you to tell you I am not hiding. I’ve read the stories,” he said.

After Netwerk24 informed him of some of the allegations about unpaid loans, he said he was not going to comment yet.

“It is a complex case and I am consulting with my lawyers,” he said.

The Maak ‘n Las funny man at first did not want to disclose who his lawyer is, but called Netwerk24 later to confirm that it is Advocate Sakkie Maartens.

A number of people have alleged that Nel had borrowed money from them and never repaid them.

A retired journalist from Cape Town who wanted to remain anonymous, on Sunday said he lost nearly R50 000 to Nel.

Nel was a registered private financial adviser until 2012 and worked for Old Mutual.

He even tried to borrow money from Ton Vosloo, retired non-executive chairperson of Naspers.

Vosloo confirmed that they were friends.

“I was never his client. We were just lunch buddies and I enjoyed his stories. He always wanted to borrow money, but I told him loans sour friendships,” Vosloo said.

Another friend of Nel, who did not want to be named, struggled for two months to locate Nel. He appointed a tracing company and found Nel in Durbanville.

His lawyer, Christie Viviers, will apply for Nel to be sequestrated.
