Makari: Army should abolish Assir phenomenon, seize all weapons

NNA - Deputy House Speaker Farid Makari said in a statement Monday that the army should not hesitate to resolve the situation in Sidon and terminate the odd and suspicious phenomenon named "Ahmed Al-Assir and his group".

Makari stressed the Army's need to address all forms of provocation and strife in the city, "including the armed appearance of Hezbollah elements yesterday which could have turned the Army battle against aggressors into a sectarian disaster."

Makari considered it "unacceptable to end this with compromise. There are fallen martyrs of the Lebanese army; it is not permissible to negotiate with the killers of LAF officers and soldiers. It is a matter of dignity and prestige of the state in general."

"The Lebanese want the army to complete what it started and end this strange abnormal phenomenon," he said, urging to put all the weapons, without exception, in the hands of the state institutions.

The Deputy House Speaker believed that "the phenomenon of Sheikh Ahmed Al-Assir would not have expanded if it weren't for the weapons in the hands of Hezbollah, and if these weapons were not used repeatedly to intimidate, exert pressure and change the internal political equations."

He concluded that what is happening today in Sidon should be an additional incentive to work to address the main problem which is Hezbollah's organized armed group parallel to the state, and its implementation of foreign agendas that keep putting Lebanon at risk.
