Casual dining brands on the up in Birmingham

Birmingham now has the third highest total supply of branded casual dining restaurants of any place outside of London following a flurry of openings.

Property consultancy Savills has reported that the city has 37 branded casual dining restaurants. Of these, 11 per cent have opened since the end of 2012.

Elsewhere in the Midlands, Nottingham has 30 branded casual dining restaurants, the ninth highest of the UK's top 50 towns in terms of supply. Leicester has 27, ranking it 13th in terms of supply.

Derby, Solihull and Leamington Spa have 16, 15 and 14 respectively. All ranked in the top 50 for supply.

Steve Henderson, retail director at Savills, said: "The casual dining scene in Leeds has swung from mass market to aspirational, with Busaba Eathai, Friends of Ham, Steve Pilling's Dockyard, tapas bar 53 Degrees North and renowned chefs including Marco Pierre White all due to open in the city over the next 12 months.

"While mass market brands still have their place and perform well, consumers are consistently seeking something different which will drive further growth in branded restaurants in Leeds as well as Yorkshire’s other big towns and cities for the foreseeable future."
