N2 closed as protests rock Ballito

Durban - Violent protest action has closed the N2 and other arterial roads that surround the informal settlement of Shaka's Head near Ballito on Tuesday morning.

IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst said protesters had taken to the bridge that runs over the N2 and had stoned passing cars.

“At this stage the N2 has been closed while police deal with the situation,” he said.

Herbst added that the P445, a link road between Ballito and Compensation, had also been closed by the angry rioters who had erected burning blockades across the carriageway.

The action is understood to relate to the choice of an ANC ward councillor candidate in the area.

In February, residents took to the street and ran riot in Ballito, setting fire to the councillor Jetro Banda’s car and house.

He had to be taken to a place of safety until the backlash had subsided.
