KARACHI: Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) President Alamgir Sheikh is confident that the country’s young squad will do well in the IBSF World 6-Red and Team Championships to be played from July 20-30 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Pakistan will be without former IBSF World Team Champions Mohammad Asif — who is also a former Asian 6-Red winner and the 2012 IBSF individual world champion —and Mohammad Sajjad.

The PBSA decided to drop the two after a series of poor performances, preferring those who performed in the domestic circuit.

Pakistan will be represented by Asjad Iqbal, Babar Masih, Sohail Shehzad and Mohammad Bilal in the two championships.

In the team event, Asjad will partner Babar while Sohail will team up with Bilal.

“Although we’re going in with a young squad, I have faith in them,” PBSA President Sheikh told The Express Tribune. “We gave many chances to Asif and Sajjad over the last few tournaments despite below-par performances but there was no improvement; reaching the quarter-finals is just not enough.”

The squad’s training camp will be held at the Legend Snooker Parlor in Karachi from July 12-18.

The official added that Haris Tahir and Mohammad Saqib are expected to participate in the World U18 and U21 Championships to be played in Belgium next month from August 15-25.

“Haris and Saqib are in good touch after coming back from a three-week training camp in Bangkok,” concluded Sheikh.
