1984 riots: CBI gets 2 months to complete probe against Jagdish Tytler

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shivali Sharma said if “no fruitful results” are shown in these two months, the central agency’s superintendent of police would have to provide an explanation.

A Delhi court Monday pulled up the CBI for not taking “proper steps” for completing its investigation in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, in which the agency had given a clean chit to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. The court has now directed the CBI to complete the probe in two months.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shivali Sharma said if “no fruitful results” are shown in these two months, the central agency’s superintendent of police would have to provide an explanation.

The directions came after the CBI prosecutor filed a status report which said the probe is ongoing and sought two more months to file the final report. The case pertains to the riots at Gurudwara Pulbangash in north Delhi where three people were killed on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

On December 4, 2015, the court had directed the CBI to further probe the case against Tytler, saying that the statement of arms dealer Abhishek Verma had revealed the active role played by the Congress leader in extending a “helping hand” to a witness against him.
