Iron rod crashes 15 storeys into kitchen on third floor
A member of the Saifee Hospital trust complained after an iron rod fell through his neighbour’s roof.

A member of the Saifee Hospital trust has complained to the police after an iron rod from a building that is under construction fell into his neighbour’s home on Thursday. Abdul Kadir, a resident of Karani Niwas, Byculla East, filed the complaint after the construction material fell from the 15 storey Maimoon Tower and crashed through the roof of S Yousufi, his neighbour who works in the merchant navy.

Although no-one was injured, Yousufi’s niece was in the apartment when the rod pierced the roof and fell into the kitchen. “She told me about the incident and I rushed home,” Yousufi said. “This rod could have seriously injured my niece. It has caused a lot of damage to my ceiling. This isn’t the first time that such an incident has occurred. We’d filed an FIR earlier but no action was taken.”

Residents alleged that in 2014, an iron frame at Maimoon Tower came apart at multiple sections and fell off, damaging the roof, water and sewage pipes of Karani Niwas and two other buildings. Hussain Rangwala, a Karani Niwas resident said, “This must stop. The builder does not adhere to safety norms. We have had issued with him in the past as well. You can’t just play with people’s lives.”

Abdul Kadir said that the Karani Niwas residents wanted to file another FIR but that the cops were delaying the process. “They promise that they will call the builder and question him but nothing happens. We are living in constant fear. Construction material keeps falling on our roofs and terraces. We have been left completely at the builder’s mercy. We have been suffering from years.”

Avinash Shingte, Senior Inspector of Byculla Police Station said, “We have received their complaint and are looking into it. Luckily there were no injuries and everyone is safe. We will be calling the concerned person for questioning too.”

Aslam Juma, one of the partners in Rapid construction, which is undertaking the work on Maimoon Tower said, “We are following all the safety norms and are taking all precautions. It was a windy day. The force of the wind caused the rod to fall off. I have spoken to the society members. We are ready to pay for the damages.”
