Kaithal, July 11

It was day of protests in Kaithal today, as farmers, anganwari workers, nursing students, JBT teachers and PWD workers organised demonstrations and processions.

They marched to the Mini-Secretariat and submitted their memorandums of demands to Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Bakhshish Singh Virk and other officials. The police had a tough time in maintaining law and order during protests.

Several farmers led by BKU president Rattan Maan assembled in Jawahar Park, held a meeting, proceeded to Shakti Bhawan and sat on a dharna.

They closed gates of the office of the Superintending Engineer (SE), UHBVN, and raised slogans against the government for not granting them compensation for last year’s crop loss suffered due to hailstorm.

An Executive Engineer (XEN) reached the spot and assured action on their demands within a week.

In another protest, nursing students demanded their examinations, which had not been conducted for two years, should be held, and cases registered against their colleagues who protested in Karnal on July 10, 2015, be withdrawn. The CPS assured them of taking up their demands with Health Minister Anil Vij.

Mechanical workers of the Public Works Department (PWD) took out a procession to the Mini-Secretariat and later submitted a memorandum to a tehsildar.

Anganwari workers and helpers burnt an effigy of Union Minister Maneka Gandhi. They said the government had announced regular jobs for those with 10 years’ experience, but now it was trying to privatise their services.

JBT teachers, selected during the previous Congress regime but yet to be appointment, held a meeting and a protest procession.
