Patna: The special investigation team (SIT) probing the Inter topper scam on Monday set free the former deputy development commissioner (DDC) of Munger Nagendra Singh, who was earlier detained for interrogation. Singh is currently posted as commissioner at Darbhanga Municipal Corporation. Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj, who heads the SIT, said, “We released the former DDC after being satisfied that he did not have any role in the transfer and deputation of staff or teachers of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB).
He provided us a letter issued to the former Board secretary Srinivas Chandra Tiwary asking him to go by the rules of the Board.”
The SSP added, “We will record Tiwary’s statement under Section 164 of CrPC and use it as evidence. Now we are more focused on preparing the chargesheet.”
Nagendra’s name popped up in the topper scam after former Board chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad’s personal assistant Anil Kumar Singh mentioned his name during interrogation. Anil, originally from Hilsa in Nalanda district, was first appointed as teacher on contract basis in Munger and soon asked to join the office of DEO. Later, he was made PA to the BSEB chairman and Nagendra, in the capacity of DDC, gave no-objection certificate for Anil’s transfer.
SIT sources said the team will soon interrogate the principals and directors of 200 colleges which got affiliation in the last two years, during the tenure of Lalkeshwar as the BSEB chairman.
