Cristiano Ronaldo favourite for 2016 FIFA Ballon d'Or following Portugal's Euro 2016 success

Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal lifts the European Championship trophy

Cristiano Ronaldo is just 2/9 with Sky Bet to win the 2016 FIFA Ballon d'Or after leading Portugal to glory at Euro 2016.

The Real Madrid star was already odds-on at 4/6 before lifting the trophy but is now considered nailed on to land football's top individual award for a third time in four years.

Portugal's captain only lasted 25 minutes of Sunday's final after picking up a knee injury, but contributed three goals and three assists to his nation's first major tournament triumph.

That success adds to a second Champions League crown with Real Madrid, although they were pipped to the La Liga title by Barcelona.

Holder Lionel Messi has now drifted out to 5/1 having endured contrasting fortunes with Argentina at the Copa America, calling time on his international career after losing a fourth major final in nine years.

The 29-year-old was considered favourite for the award at the start of the year, with Argentina expected to triumph in USA while Portugal were up against odds of 18/1 for the Euros.
