In town last week for the ten-year anniversary of the prestigious Hoskins Scholarship, Bridget spoke to the Lithgow Mercury about what she’s up to now and her future plans.
Bridget is halfway through a Bachelor of Arts and Law – a five year degree – and has also become involved in student politics and a number of leadership activities.
Majoring in Indigenous studies and minoring in politics, Bridget said her decision to study law came after taking a legal studies elective in high school where she realised the law was much more than a simple set of rules to follow.
Bridget said her ultimate goal is to make positive, systemic change for Indigenous people and is passionate about legal reform and social policy. Studying for the Bar is something she’d like to do in future.
She is also the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Officer of the National Union of Students as well as being the Indigenous Officer for UNSW’s Student Representative Council last year.
“I am engaged in extracurricular activities which range from organising social and cultural events at UNSW and the local Aboriginal community,” she said.
Music is still very much a passion for Bridget who plays gigs every now and then but she admitted free time is at a premium these days.
“I also love to spend time with family and friends just to ground myself and have a laugh, listen to some good music and be happy.”
Regular visits back home are a comfort for Bridget who misses the quiet of the country.
“My parents and little sister still reside in Lithgow along with extended family and it is great to come back to visit them,” she said.
Bridget said her best advice for young people in any situation, whether leaving school, starting a career or otherwise, would be to believe in yourself and know that big achievements take time and a lot of effort.
“Everybody has a different journey, be proud of yours.”
