A gold chain weighing six sovereigns was allegedly snatched from a schoolteacher near her home in Viraganoor on Saturday evening.

Police sources said B. Nirmal Selvarani (58), a teacher in a government-aided school in Madurai and the wife of a retired Sub- Inspector of Police, had gone to a church in Madurai and was on her way back home when the incident happened.

As she was walking in Fifth Cross Street of Maharajan Nagar, where her house is located, a youth, aged around 20 years, allegedly snatched her chain. The complainant had told the police that the youth escaped with a biker, who was waiting for him a few metres away. Based on her complaint, Silaiman police have registered a case.
