MANSA: Facing a debt of Rs 4 lakh, a 20-year-old farmer committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at Ralla village, 15km from here, on Saturday night.
Jagdeep Singh was reportedly under depression as his family had not been able to repay the loan. Seera Singh, an uncle of the deceased, said Jageep's father, Amarjit Singh, had not been keeping well for a couple of years and Jagdeep started farming at an early age.
"The family owned 3 acres and owed Rs 4 lakh to a bank and a money lender. One of his sisters is of marriageable age. Seeing all this, Jagdeep was under depression and ended his life," Seera Singh added. The district president farmers' organisation BKU Ekta Ugrahan, Ram Singh Bhaini Bagha, demanded a Rs 5-lakh compensation for Jagdeep's family.
