Speaking up for art and artists

Artist Chippa Sudhakar’s studio is now a place for art interactions and is providing a platform for art maestros and enthusiasts to speak up.

Artist Chippa Sudhakar has been painting for decades now. So when he realised that one of the biggest problems that young artists faced in the city was not a lack of talent but a lack of communication from their side, he did what he could do best — opened his studio to them.

Two Saturdays in a month, artists — young and old — gather at Sudhakar’s studio in Kismathpur for an interaction that helps artists communicate better. “Most of the galleries these days have presentations and talks by the artists and though they have great talent, they fall short when it comes to communicating with the audience. That itself creates a gap and so, I decided to host these interactions,” says Chippa Sudhakar.

As of now, two such interactions have taken place and Sudhakar says that everyone gets to talk. “We pick up topics that are relevant to the art scene. We have dealt with new techniques and have also spoken about how we need to be open to criticism by the audience and to find ways to bridge the gap between a common man and art,” he adds. Artist A. Kiran Kumar, who was part of the event, says, “In cities like Baroda, artists have interactions very often and that was missing in the city. So this is more than welcome. Here, we have young artists coming up and clearing their doubts about a career in art. It is a win-win situation as we all have an idea of what the art community is doing and it is also a platform for youngsters to know more about the art world.”
