Hubballi: A long-pending demand of passengers will be fulfilled soon as the South Western Railway is installing two escalators at Hubballi railway station.
Passengers with heavy luggage, especially women, children and senior citizens, were finding it difficult to reach platform numbers 2, 3, 4, and 5. Speaking to STOI, Guruswamy, senior divisional electrical engineer, said that the Hubballi divisional office noticed that passengers faced inconvenience while crossing platforms.
"As per public demand, two escalators are being installed - one between platform no. 2 and 3 and another between 4 and 5," he said.
Guruswamy said that the first escalator will be launched on July 15 and another by the end of this month. "Passengers can use these escalators only for upward movement. To get down, they have to use the foot overbridge. Escalators for downward direction will be installed later," he said. The two escalators are coming up with an investment of Rs 2.30 crore, he informed.
Welcoming the step, Tippanna Sonnad, a 79-year-old passenger from Saunshi, said he could not use the skywalk due to his age. Another passenger Ranjita Shetty from Davanagere said, "It's very difficult to move in Hubballi railway station along with luggage and children. We missed trains several times due to the hurdles to reach platforms. We hope the new escalators will solve this problem."
