Surat: A hyena attacked three farmers in Chakadiya village of Songadh in Tapi district on Friday late evening. The injured were returning home when the animal attacked them. This is the second such incident of hyena attack in a month's time in south Gujarat.
Arjun Gamit (43), Yakub Gamit (36) and Babu Gamit (36) suffered minor injuries to their legs.
They were admitted to hospital in Vyara. Their condition was stable, forest officials said.
The farmers had gone to deposit daily collection of milk from their cattle farm and were returning home when the hyena came from a nearby farm and attacked them. As the terrified farmers shouted for help the animal ran away and disappeared into the farms. Initially the farmers suspected that it was a leopard but during investigation by forest officials it was found that a hyena had attacked them.
"Senior officials from forest department visited the location and carried out investigation. It was ascertained in the investigation that the animal was a hyena," said G I Naik, chief conservator of forest, Surat.
Earlier, a hyena had attacked four teenagers in Tarsadi village near Kosamba of Surat in June while they were sleeping outside their residence. The teenagers suffered injuries on head, eyes and hands. Locals submitted a memorandum to the municipality for quick action to cage the animal after which forest department was also alerted.
