Gurgaon: The MCG is all set to sign a deal with private firm Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) on Monday to set up a waste treatment plant near Basai to check the haphazard dumping of construction and demolition waste in the city.
The authority claims that the plant will become operational within six months. However, there is a bit of cynicism regarding the initiative as several times in the past, the civic agency has announced the setting up of the plant but has failed to do so.
"We have finalised all details and the agreement will be signed on Monday with IL&FS officials," said Rohit Yadav, joint commissioner, MCG.
"The plant will come up on a 3.5 acre land near Basai and will be up and running in six months' time. It will have a capacity to process around 300 metric tonnes of C&D waste per day and make products like interlocking tiles and bricks of various sizes," he added.
"Builders can directly drop their construction waste and they will be charged Rs 200 per metric tonne. However, they will have to arrange the transportation on their own. Also, we will establish an environment cell, which will have two residents from each ward. They will be delegated power to issue challan of Rs 5000 per vehicle, as per NGT guidelines, if somebody is found dumping C&D waste in the open," Yadav added.
The plant was under spotlight last year when in May, when mayor Vimal Yadav, after visiting the IL&FS plant in Delhi, had announced that the letter of award has been handed over to the company and the plant, on a land measuring five acres in Begumpur Katola, will start working within six months. However, nothing happened after that.
In the absence of a treatment plant and lack of vigilance, C&D waste is dumped across the city at present. This also leads to waterlogging during the rains. This time around, MCG officials claim that the plant will indeed be installed within six months.
