A gang of chain snatchers was busted after two policemen who had observed the CCTV footage of some snatchers in North-West Delhi’s Model Town happened to spot them on the road three days later.
With the arrest of the five snatchers, police claimed to have solved 65 cases of snatchings and robberies committed by this gang over the past few months.
The gang used their motorcycle riding skills to swoop down on the victims and make away with the gold chains or mobile phones. Police said the gang was inspired by the Bollywood flick, Dhoom, and believed that a good command over motorcycles would help them escape each time.
While they frequently used scooties to execute their crimes, they would hire a Hero Karizma motorcycle for Rs 2,000 per day when speed was required.
Chacha Chowdhary
The North-West Delhi police was behind this gang ever since they received a complaint from a businessman whose gold chain was snatched while he was parking his car outside his home in Model Town last Monday.
One of the CCTV cameras installed in the area of the crime had captured the motorcycle.
“The footage revealed that it was a white Karizma motorcycle. The number plate had ‘Chacha Chowdhary’ written over it. The pillion rider was wearing a white helmet with tri-coloured stripes,” said Vijay Singh, DCP (North-West).
Striped helmet
Coincidentally, head constable Jitendra and constable Manoj, who had observed the footage, happened to be patrolling the same area three days later when they spotted the same motorcycle with the pillion rider wearing the same tri-colour striped helmet.
The motorcycle riders were signalled to stop, but they sped away. The policemen, however, chased and nabbed them within minutes.
The suspects initially denied their involvement in crimes, but when presented with the CCTV footage, they allegedly confessed. At their instance, their three other associates were subsequently nabbed.
