Police grill AAP MLA for 8 hours, let him go
AAP MLA Naresh Yadav
Patiala: Police questioned Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Naresh Yadav on Saturday for eight hours at the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) staff centre in Ladda Kothi in Sangrur district in connection with the desecration of Quran in Malerkotla town.
Yadav alleged that the police were rude and discourteous. He said he answered all 100 questions authentically.
"The police, in fact, wanted to arrest me, but could not do so for fear of adverse publicity and weak evidence," he claimed.
Sangrur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pritpal Singh Thind claimed that important clues had come to light, on which the police would be working in the next few days. Talking to TOI over the phone, Thind said Naresh gave different answers this time. The same questions were answered differently in the previous questioning held in Patiala. SSP Thind refused to comment on the possible arrest of the AAP MLA. "The court will decide now," he said.
Sources said police would now try to procure a warrant from the court to arrest Naresh after placing details of the interrogation. Thind said they would now be studying minutely the variants in questions, after which the next course of action would be taken. Kewal Singh and Navin Kumar, the other suspects in the case, too were allowed to go. Coming out of the interrogation centre, both said the police were satisfied with their face-to-face questioning with Naresh Yadav. They had accepted their version of the story.
Manpreet Randhawa, media coordinator, AAP, alleged that the entire process was being monitored by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal. He (Badal junior) was being briefed on an hourly basis, and claimed that the police did not find any evidence to arrest the MLA. In the morning, Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann and Punjab AAP convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur accompanied Naresh to Ladda Kothi. They were not allowed to enter the CIA office. AAP volunteers staged a protest in front of the police office and dispersed peacefully.
