If a recent proposal by the road transport ministry is approved, life will become a wee bit smoother for driving license holders. According to the proposal, the ministry wants to allow vehicle owners and drivers to carry soft or hard copies of their documents such as the driving license, registration book, insurance papers, etc. These soft copies will be considered valid by the police during verification purposes.

A few more points the ministry has suggested would be the freedom to apply for registration or license with any of the RTO’s in the respective state while the renewal of licenses can be done one year prior to its expiry as compared to the current limit of 30 days. Another rule currently under consideration would be compulsory helmets for children over four years of age.

Likely to come up during the monsoon session, the proposed changes are aimed at making the service user friendly and improving road safety provisions. The move, once implemented will reduce the physical interface with RTO’s while the law enforcing agencies will have handheld devices to check the authenticity of the documents.

Due to the alarming rise in the number of road accidents taking place across the country, a proposal for increase in the penalties including jail, fine, impounding of vehicles and cancellation of licenses have been included in the cabinet note. The main focus though, will be on a refresher’s course for drivers.
