Sanjay's record run continues; Karnataka dominate

He has set his third national mark on the fourth day of the Glenmark junior national aquatic championship.

Bengaluru: Sanjay CJ continued his tremendous show as he set his third national mark on the fourth day of the Glenmark junior national aquatic championship held at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre on Friday. The Karnataka boy broke Aaron D'Souza's decade-year-old record in the 400M freestyle event in Group II. The Dolphin Academy-trainee touched the pad in 4:15.58 seconds to beat the previous mark of 4:16.22 seconds. Maharashtra's Rudransh Mishra (4:25.65s) and Saif Chandran (4:25.7) of Karnataka completed the podium.

“I had expected the record. After 200 metres I felt a little tired and slowed because I have been doing a lot of events. If I had rested a bit more I could have done better,” said a slightly dejected Sanjay. The other national mark of the day went to Maharashtra’s Neel Roy who shattered Aravind M's previous mark of 2:11.13 seconds with an effort of 2:10.74 seconds in the Group I 200M individual medley. Shivaksh Sahu (2:15.4) and P Chandru (2:16.92) took the silver and bronze.

“I was not expecting a record but I was targeting it. I worked a lot on my past mistakes and went all out in each strokes and it worked,” said Roy after the race. The other gold medalist for the defending champions on the day included, N Srihari (200M BS, Group I), P Kushal (200M IM, Group II), Damini K Gowda (50M Fly, Group I), Khushi Dinesh (1500M FS, Group II) and Mayuri Lingaraj (50M Fly, Group II). In race for the overall championship, Karnataka further strengthened their spot at the top of the medals tally, leading with 28 golds, 17 silver and 18 bronze ahead of Mumbai who have 14 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze to their name.
