Limited hostel seats at colleges affiliated with Panjab University

Outstation students prefer to take accommodation in college hostels. But 80 per cent seats are occupied by the old students, leaving only 20 per cent seats for the freshers.

For a large number of students taking admissions in Panjab University colleges, the number of hostel seats in each college are grossly inadequate.

Outstation students prefer to take accommodation in college hostels. But the colleges have limited number of seats out of which 80 per cent are occupied by the old students, leaving only 20 per cent seats for the freshers.

In GGDSD College, there are 300 seats in the girls’ hostel, of which 200 have been reserved for old students. A total of 1,400 students have applied for the remaining 100 seats. Hostel faculty will provide seats to the students according to the merit list provided by the college by giving 5-10 pc seats for students of each course. The boys’ hostel has 270 seats, of which 200 are reserved for old students and 70 for new comers. A total of 1,300 boys have applied for these seats.

Dev Samaj College for women, Sector 45, has a tie-up with SD College in Sector 32. The college has 250 seats in the hostel, which is divided in the ratio of 70/30 . 70 pc seats are reserved for the students of Dev Samaj College and 30 pc seats have been provided to the students of SD College. The hostel admission process is on the first come first serve basis.

DAV College ,Sector 10, offers 20 AC rooms in both the boys and girls hostel (with additional charges). There are 500 seats in the girls hostel, of which 200 are reserved for old students,300 are reserved on the basis of merit out of 800 applicants. While there are 250 seats in the boys’ hostel in which 150 seats have been provided to the freshers in the boys hostel on the basis of their merit out of 380 applicants and 100 seats are reserved for the previous year students.

MCM College, Sector-36, has 1000 seats in the hostel, of which 500 have been provided to the old students. The students scoring less marks or failing in there exams are expelled from the hostel. 1500 students have applied for the rest 500 seats this year, which will be given on merit.

The Guru Gobind Singh College for Girls in Sector 26, Guru Gobind Singh College (Co-ed) and Guru Gobind Singh College for pharmacy have only one girls’ hostel, which can accommodate only 350 students. The number of applications received here also exceeds 400.

Chandigarh has seen a rise in the number of students coming from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu.

With limited number of hostel seats, the students are forced to stay in paying guest facilities where they have to pay extra and sometimes have to deal with harassment as the land lords take advantage of their situation and charge extra for providing the basic amenities. This can also be seen as the reason for rise in the number of illegal paying guest facilities in the city.

Garima from Ludhiana who managed to secure admission in BBA with 90 per cent marks in a reputed city college is still looking for a seat in the hostel. She is placed at the bottom of the waiting list of a hostel, which has been filled to its full capacity.
