The shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile have produced countless public expressions of outrage and sadness from both civilians and celebrities over the last few days. Yesterday, Beyoncé published a powerful call to action on the front page of her website, while a GoFundMe page set up by writer/actress Issa Rae raised over half-a-million dollars for Sterling’s five children in less than 24 hours. And now, as Jay Z, Chris Brown, and others have done recently, Miguel has released a protest song of sorts: “How Many,” a startling new song written and performed in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

The new song, easily the most political from Miguel to date, conveys both individual and collective anguish. When “How Many” begins, Miguel’s voice creeps in with the whisper “I cannot stay silent,” before he builds to a harrowing lament: “I’m tired of human lives turned into hashtags and prayer hands.” Throughout, Miguel alternates between exasperated—“I’m tired of all the pain”—and empowered, repeating in the chorus that “it’s time to wake up.”

The version that has been launched (via Pitchfork) is labeled “ruff 1,” and Miguel has indicated that he will update it “every week” until its completion. This initial release is rough, even difficult to discern in parts—he reportedly recorded it over a few hours in his hotel room—but in its sound and in its words, “How Many” hums along vividly, as a mournful meditation on pain and loss.
