SI suspended over celebratory firing

Lucknow: A sub-inspector posted in Sitapur district was suspended on Friday for not taking action against a group of people firing openly with illegal firearms during a pre-wedding event.
Deputed at Rampur Kalan, Sitaram Swarnkar was invited to the tilak ceremony of the son of Ram Naresh Bhargava, a native of Bhagwantpuram village, on Thursday. Late in the evening, Swarnkar reached in his uniform and sat in the front row.
At the function, Bhargava, along with his older son, started loading a rifle and a countrymade gun.
The duo then fired in the air while Swarnkar sat and watched. At the programme, a dance troupe was also reportedly performing to obscene numbers. A guest recorded the entire episode on his mobile phone and shared it online. News channels started airing the video on Friday and Lucknow zone IG A Satish Ganesh ordered an inquiry.
Sitapur police superintendent Saumitra Yadav also examined the video. "Swarnkar was present in uniform and he should have done something.
He has been placed under suspension and firearms seized," said Yadav. Bhargava and his son were arrested and a case registered against them. The Bhargava family does not have a firearms licence, added Yadav.
