Contaminated water claims 5 lives in MP village

Jabalpur, MP, Jul 8 (UNI) With two more persons succumbing today, the number of deaths - allegedly caused by drinking contaminated water from a hand pump in Gauri village - rose to five in as many days.
Shah Nayan Maravi died in the wee hours on Monday, Dhannobai Sayya perished on Wednesday and Leelabai Markam met a similar fate yesterday. Today’s victims were identified as Ram Bharose Barkade and Sulekhabai. After several persons fell ill at the village, Health Department officials had the village well’s water analysed on June 27 and it was found to be contaminated. Chlorine was sprinkled and the residents advised to avoid using the water. However, the hand pump’s water was not analysed.
Police said the five were hospitalised after suffering diarrhoea. Following discharge, they began drinking the water again.
