Marquinhos could quit Paris Saint-Germain over Olympics - brother

Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos has insisted that his club should allow him to play for Brazil at next month's Olympic Games, with the star's brother suggesting he would even be prepared to leave the club over it.

Marquinhos, 22, has already represented Brazil at the Copa America this summer. As a result, new PSG boss Unai Emery hinted earlier this week that the former Roma centre-back would be better off skipping the Rio event to avoid missing the start of the French league season.

Marquinhos has been included in Brazil's squad for the Olympics but there is no obligation on clubs to release players for the tournament.

"There are a lot of things being said about this story," Marquinhos told L'Equipe. "I try to stay away from all of that but it catches up with me -- it's inevitable.

"I've been working for 12 years to experience such a challenge -- I want to participate in the adventure and be with my teammates.

"So I can tell you that, yes, I want to be there for myself, for my family, for my friends."

His older brother Luan told L'Equipe that PSG would have to show consideration or else Marquinhos would be forced to leave the French champions.

Luan said: "Marquinhos has always been exemplary with the club -- he's never complained. He has however often been a spectator during big matches," he added. "We were clear... Marquinhos is going to play at the Olympics.

"Until now, we've been maleable. But it can no longer continue like that otherwise we're going to enter into a conflict. Our patience has limits.

"We like the club, the supporters, but they also have to show us a minimum of respect or else he's going to have to leave PSG," he concluded.

Meanwhile, the player's father Marcos said that if he had been asked to choose between playing in the Copa America and the Olympics, his son would have chosen the latter.

The Olympic football competition is the only major title that five-time World Cup winners Brazil have yet to win.
