Mangaluru: Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations turned into a tragedy for Sarfaraz who was mowed down by a speeding bus near Falnir, here on Wednesday.
According to an eye witness, a bus plying from BC Road to Mangaluru city, hit the 36-year-old Sarfaraz Nawaz who was riding a two-wheeler around 2.30pm. He was pinned under the bus wheels soon after it hit him and dragged him nearly for 15 metres away from the spot.
Though the public present at the spot took him to Wenlock Government Hospital, he was declared brought dead.
Police said that he died due to severe injuries on the head and stomach. Sarfaraz, who hails from Goa was married to a girl from Yekkur in city and was pursuing his higher studies here. After Eid lunch at his house, he had come to the city to meet other relatives. He is survived by his wife and a child. According to police, his wife expecting his second child.
Sources claimed that according to private service bus permit, all the buses should ply via Pumpwell to Ambedkar Circle and not Kankanady-Falnir Road. In order to avoid traffic and save time, few buses take the alternative route.
When TOI contacted M Uday Nayak, ACP (Traffic), he clarified that few of the buses do have permit to ply via Falnir road. "I have asked our personnel to cancel license and seize the bus if it violates its permit rules," he added. A case has been registered at East traffic police station and the bus driver has been arrested.
