Chandigarh: MC writes to Admn, demands filling of 606 vacant posts

It was mentioned in the letter that all the posts have been lying vacant for more than one year. “These posts are lying vacant for more than one year under the direct recruitment quota. The municipal corporation is responsible for providing basic infrastructure in the city. The municipal corporation has a huge shortage of manpower owing to which work is suffering,” the joint commissioner stated in the latter, adding that filling of the posts is urgently required with the civic body recently implementing the Citizens Charter.

It was stated that a total of 152 posts are lying vacant in the commissioner municipal corporation office, including four posts of sub-inspectors (enforcement), one law officer, two accountants, one tax collector and 125 clerks.

In the public health wing of the municipal corporation, 214 posts are lying vacant. Of this there are posts of three junior engineers, 53 tubewell operators, 28 sewermen and 16 meter readers. The wing requires 16 keymen, 29 fitters (15 for metering and 14 for distributions) apart from research assistants, trademates and others.

In the B and R wing, the civic body is short of 128 men. Posts of six junior engineers, eight streetlight inspectors, two work inspectors, 16 beldars and women coolies, 23 peons, 11 masons, and 11 gardeners, are lying vacant. Six linemen and assistant linemen are required apart from four sweepers.

The joint commissioner also mentioned that they require manpower for the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) wing as well. There are 105 posts lying vacant in this wing. Ten sanitary inspectors and 39 beldars are required in the MOH wing. The MOH wing requires 22 sweepers, five gangmen and three sewermen.

The secretary has been told that they require five watch room duty operators and one cashier and sweeper in the fire wing.

The letter also mentioned about the finance involved in it. “The financial implications will be approximately Rs 9.75 crore per annum. These have been worked out at the rates fixed by the DC, UT as per instruction of Chandigarh administration as on January 18 this year,” mentioned the letter.
