New district collector T N Hariharan took charge on Wednesday. He has vowed to reduce human-animal conflict in the Coimbatore region. In the past few days, many incidents of man-animal conflicts were reported, and more than five elephants have died in the region. Hariharan had served as the collector of Dindigul and Virudhunagar districts.
School celebrates golden jubilee year: The Avila Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School celebrated its golden jubilee year at the school auditorium on Tuesday.
To mark the 50th year celebrations, the school has carried out 50 projects for the welfare of society. The 14th project on solid waste management was inaugurated on Tuesday by deputy commissioner of police, law and order, S Lakshmi.
Two injured in road mishap: Two men sustained injuries after a school van hit them on Tuesday around 12.30pm on Kavundampalayam-Nallampalayam Road. The driver of the school van, Kandasamy P, 50, was reportedly driving the vehicle in a rash manner when it hit two pedestrians and a motorist. The victims were admitted to a private hospital in the city.
Woman lodges dowry case against hubby: A 33-year-old woman has registered a case of dowry and harassment against her husband and her in-laws. Krithika S, a native of Tirupur, was married to Balasundaram C, 36. Police have registered a case against Balasundaram, and his parents, Chellamuthu and Thathamma for criminal intimidation and dowry. The accused were, however, not arrested.
Thirukkural elocution contest: Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam is all set to organise Thirukkural elocution contest from July 30 to August 28 for school and college students in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The preliminary rounds of the contest will be held in Coimbatore on August 21 at Laurel Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kavundampalaym. Interested persons can collect the application forms from the nearest Shriram Chits branches or from Shriram Chits, 416-C, I Floor, Iyappa Building, NSR Road, Saibaba Colony.
