A motorist from Yekkur was run over by a city bus near Moti Mahal hotel on Falnir Road on Wednesday.

The Mangaluru East Traffic police said Sarfaraz Nawaz (36), a resident of Yekkur, finished Id festivities with his family members and was proceeding to meet a few of his relatives on his motorcycle, along with a relative, when the accident occurred.

The bus heading towards State Bank from B.C. Road rammed into the motorcycle around 2.30 p.m.

The police said Nawaz fell off his motorcycle and came under the wheels of the bus. Passersby and the fellow motorists took Nawaz to the Government Wenlock Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The pillion rider escaped unhurt, the police said.

The police said a case had been registered against Prabhuchandra Rai, the bus driver.

They would inquire if the bus driver violated permit norms by coming on the Kankanady–Falnir Road route.

Nawaz, a native of Goa, had married to a woman from Yekkur. He was staying in the city and was pursuing his postgraduate studies. The couple have a child, the police said.
