When Wales take on Portugal in the last four of Euro 2016 this evening, it'll be the sixth time that megastars Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale have faced off in their careers.

The pair may be club teammates at Real Madrid, but they'll very much be on opposite sides when the first of the semi finals gets underway in Lyon.

Ronaldo has never been on the losing team when playing a side featuring Bale, getting the better of him three times whilst a Manchester United player and twice since his move to the Spanish capital in 2009 when Bale was at Tottenham .

It will be the first time they've lined up against each other on the international stage, and would be the perfect time for Bale to end his losing streak with his Welsh side chasing a place in a historic first major tournament final.

Here's how the previous showdowns between Bale and Ronaldo panned out...

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham (FA Cup fourth round, 24 January 2009)

Do you remember the first time?

Neither player was on the scoresheet the first time they played against each other, with two goals in as many minutes from Paul Scholes and former Spurs forward Dimitar Berbatov cancelling out a Roman Pavlyuchenko opener as United moved into the last sixteen of the FA Cup.

Ronaldo was replaced by debutant and eventual United flop Zoran Tosic after 72 minutes, while Bale was hooked five minutes earlier with Adel Taarabt coming on in his place.

Winner: Ronaldo got his hands on the League Cup in 2009

Bale had to wait 98 minutes before getting on the pitch at Wembley as United won a third League Cup on penalties after a cagey 120 minutes finished goalless.

Ronaldo hit the woodwork in the last minute of normal time and scored his penalty in the shootout, but Bale could only stand and watch as Jamie O'Hara and David Bentley missed from the spot to hand United the trophy.

At the double: Ronaldo's brace was enough for him to strip off

Ronaldo played a starring role as United stunned Spurs with a spectacular second half comeback, scoring twice and setting up another as they turned a 2-0 deficit at half time into a remarkable win.

Bale meanwhile was still yet to establish himself at White Hart Lane following his move from Southampton in 2007, and only saw four minutes of action here as he replaced Luka Modric in the dying minutes.

Pain in Spain: Bale's side suffered a heavy defeat at the Bernabeu

Spurs's dream run in the Champions League turned into a nightmare in the Bernabeu as Real ran riot, with Ronaldo capping off a superb individual performance with a goal to all but seal their place in the last four.

Bale, who memorably scored a hat-trick at the San Siro against Inter Milan in the group stage, was unable to inspire a Spurs side who played much of the encounter with ten men after Peter Crouch was sent off in the 14th minute for two bookings.

If you can't beat them...

Ronaldo proved to be the match winner in the return leg, profiting from a howler from now-Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes just after half time to score his fourth goal in his last three appearances against Spurs and Bale.

Bale completed the full 90 minutes, but with Real more than happy to sit back and defend their sizeable lead his impact on the match was limited.
