Corruption main reason for TANGEDCO’s slide: Anbumani

July 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

PMK’s youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday claimed that the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) was bogged by corruption as a result of which it has been downgraded to the 34th place in India by the Annual Integrated Ratings of State Power Distribution Utilities. “The report has cited administrative problems as the main reason the sorry state of TANGEDCO,” said Dr. Anbumani.

In a statement here, he said electricity boards of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Tripura are placed below Tamil Nadu. “Even Kerala, which doesn’t even have a thermal power station has bagged the 18{+t}{+h}place. This shows the maladministration of TANGEDCO,” he said.

While he rejected the report’s observations that TANGEDCO’s decision to not raise power tariff and providing free electricity as the main reasons for this sorry state, he said the report’s assertion that acquiring power from private players at high prices and putting brakes on capacity addition are entirely acceptable.

“In 2014, there was a loss of Rs. 12,000 crore despite the government raising the tariff. In March 2015, the total loss was Rs. 65,000 crore. The State government is not interested in planning for more power generation,” he alleged.

Stating the government is not generating enough power and keen on purchasing power from private players, he accused the DMK and AIADMK, which ruled the State, of systematically destroying the TANGEDCO.

Claiming that there was maladministration and lack of modernisation in the TANGEDCO, he said it was up to the State to rejuvenate the organisation.
