Jaipur: It was an unforgettable moment for Hemlata Jaiswal to see her name in the first merit list for hearing and speech impaired students declared by Maharani's College on Monday. She has become the first hearing & speech impaired student to take admission in Rajasthan University under its special admission scheme for such students. For the first time, RU has allowed hearing & speech impaired students to seek admission in undergraduate courses.
The first merit list has names of six girls, who were admitted in Maharani's Girls College.
All these girls have taken admission in BA pass course. The university, however, doesn't have a single teacher who can teach in sign language at present.
"I can't believe that I am going to study in a college. I thank my parents who supported my decision to attend college," Jaiswal conveyed through her father. Most of these students drop out after class X and XII as no government college in the state has sign language teachers.
This decision is also a life-changing one for another student Naseen who could have not studied further had the university not provided this opportunity. Vidya Jain, principal of Maharani's College, taking a step ahead has thought of appointing two translators in the university.
None of RU's constituent colleges is deaf and dumb friendly. Colleges say that they want to create an ecosystem wherein these students can grow like others. Colleges are planning to create a room where they can run digital classes for them. Besides, a team of professors in the university is working to ensure how these students can get an education without any obstacle.
Jain said that her college will have two translators soon. "Next year we would like to have such students in double digit," said Jain. RU has waived off the fees of these students to encourage others to take admission.
