Madurai: Frustrated over their long pending demand falling on deaf ears, Kanyakumari rail users once again urged the railway ministry to extend Trichy - Tirunelveli Intercity till Nagercoil.
Prior BJP rule, every railway budget used to see at least one new train or extension to be given to Kanyakumari district since it has lot of tourist and pilgrimage attraction luring thousands of North Indians.
However, the district has not seen any new trains or extensions in last two years.
The rail users from the district who have been upset over the lack of daytime trains towards Tamil Nadu have petitioning again and again to extend Intercity trains towards Nagercoil. "There are at least nine day-time trains towards Kerala but there are just two trains that too are weekly trains towards Tamil Nadu. Thousands of our people have to travel towards Tirunelveli, Madurai for education, business and employment purposes but there is no regular train like there are towards Thiruvananthapuram," rued secretary of the Kanyakumari District Rail Users Association P Edward Jeni.
The recent trigger was introduction of Indore - Kochuveli Weekly Express, perhaps the first train for the Southern region in last two years. The railway ministry without budget announcement introduced a couple of new trains like Goa - New Delhi Rajadhani Express, Tirupathi - Sai Nagar Shirdi Express, Delhi Anantvihar - Lucknow Express, Mumbai - Goa double decker and Vijayawada - Secundrabad Intercity. None of the new trains were towards Tamil Nadu, the association pointed out. TNN
