Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Sooranad Rajasekharan has said that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government is adopting double standards when it comes to starting the academic functioning of the Paripally Medical College Hospital.
Demanding the opening of the college, the Congress would launch an agitation in front of the institution from July 8, he said here on Monday.
The medical college was constructed by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). Later, the ESIC backed away from running a medical college as per the policy of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.
When the Central government made moves to hand over the medical college to the private sector, the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) government intervened and took over the institution.
Court stay
Mr. Rajasekharan said that though the UDF government took measures to start the college, a section of the Left trade unions attached to the medical college moved the court and obtained a stay. When large sections of the employees protested against the court stay, the Left leaders led by K.N. Balagopal (Rajya Sabha Member at that time) and G.S. Jayalal, MLA, feigned a show of being on the side of the employees by organising a fast at Paripally demanding the opening of the medical college, Mr. Rajasekharan alleged.
But after coming to power the LDF maintained silence when it comes to opening of the college, he said.
Mr. Rajasekharan alleged that a nexus between the managements of private sector hospitals and the LDF is the cause of the LDF government’s apathy towards opening of the college.
