Results Roundup

• In the first match on Centre Court, No. 3-seed Roger Federer beat American Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to cruise into the Wimbledon quarterfinals, his 48th Grand Slam quarterfinal. The victory equaled Martina Navratilova's all-time record of 306 Grand Slam match wins.

In the next round Federer will face Marin Cilic, after the No. 9-seed advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the third straight year when Kei Nishikori was forced to retire due to injury down 1-6, 1-5.

Before Wimbledon, Nishikori withdraw from Halle before his second round match due to a rib injury.

"It's same injury that I had it in first match in Halle. It's been not recovering well these two weeks," Nishikori said after the match. "Yeah, after the third round, it's got worst, so...Today I was hoping to get better, but it was too much pain on the court. So, yeah, couldn't really compete today."

Federer and Cilic’s last meeting was in the semifinals at the 2014 U.S. Open, where Cilic won in straight sets en route to his first Grand Slam title.

• Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is into her first Grand Slam quarterfinal after beating American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-3 on Monday. After the match, Vandeweghe said she missed a lot of easy balls in the first set.

“Second set, getting down a break early is never a confidence boost, and, you know, especially getting down a double break is not something that I should be dealing with off of my serve,” she said. “You know, I tried to keep the pressure on her as best I could, but it was a very poor returning day for me.”

• In the match of the tournament, No. 19-seed Dominika Cibulkova took down No. 3-seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 5-7, 9-7 after battling for three hours, the longest women’s match of Wimbledon 2016 thus far. The pair—who had played three times already this season—split the first two sets. After a tight third set, Cibulkova saved a match point with a forehand winner to hold to 6-6. After breaking Radwanska for 7-6, Cibulkova tried to serve out the win, but Radwanska broke back for 7-7. Finally, at 8-7, after one missed match point conversion and a few long, intense rallies, Cibulkova fired a winner to close out the win.

“It's always disappointing, especially after three hours when you really exhausted and angry that, you know, could end up either way,” Radwanska said after the match. “I think for me, it doesn't really matter right now. Of course, it's always better to play great match than the crappy one. Anyway, the result is the same. I'm here as a loser, so what can I do?”

• No. 5-seed Simona Halep advanced to the quarterfinals on Monday, beating a hobbling No. 9-seed Madison Keys 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Keys dropped the second and appeared visibly injured in the third set. Halep will move on to face No. 4-seed Angelique Kerber, who beat Misaki Doi 6-3, 6-1 earlier in the day.

• American Sam Querrey backed up his stunning win over No. 1 Novak Djokovic, winning in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-4 over Nicolas Mahut on Court 18. Seeded 28th, Querrey is the first American man to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Mardy Fish in 2011 and the last American man remaining in the tournament.

"I haven't felt many nerves yet this week. I think I'm kind of over that almost. Hopefully will just kind of play freely and have fun and play big and hopefully get another win," Querrey said after the match. "I'll have to keep my level really high. I'm feeling confident and hopefully whoever I play, I can keep it close and possibly win again."

• Defending champion Serena Williams is through to the quarterfinals with a commanding 7-5, 6-0 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Playing on Centre Court with the roof open, the first set was competitive but the grass became slippery due to light rain. The World No. 1 slipped during a point to give Kuznetsova a lead and the match was ultimately suspended at 5-all for about 30 minutes before the players returned to court, this time under the roof. Serena said the delay helped her in the second set.

"I had a little time to think about it and just calm down, really just relax. Both Svetlana and I had an opportunity to talk to our coaches. I think that really helped me out a lot," Serena said. "I talked to Patrick. He gave me some tips on what I could do."

After they resumed, Kuznetsova did not win another game. Serena’s quest for her seventh Wimbledon title and 22nd Grand Slam title will continue in the next round, where she will play Pavlyuchenkova.

No. 8-seed Venus Williams also advanced to the quarterfinals on Monday,  defeating No. 12-seed Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6, 6-4. At 36 years old, Venus became the oldest player to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Navratilova in 1994.

• Milos Raonic rallied from two sets down to win for the first time in his career on Monday, beating No. 11-seed David Goffin 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

“I think I allowed him to play too much on his terms,” Raonic said of the first two sets. “I was getting a lot of balls in and playing the points and playing maybe better-looking tennis at the beginning. I sort of gave up on that and said, ‘I got to play this on my terms.’ Maybe committed a few more unforced errors, but was hitting through the court more, not allowing him to play the way he wanted to.”

The sixth-seeded Raonic said he was happy to finally win a match after being two sets to love down. “Hopefully a nice pivotal match for me,” he said.

• No. 2-seed Andy Murray earned his 50th Wimbledon match win on Monday, beating Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 to reach his ninth-straight quarterfinals at the All England Club.

• Cibulkova may have to postpone wedding if she keeps winning

“As soon as I lost the first set, I just lost belief. Obviously felt like a mountain to climb after losing the first,” Kyrgios said after the match. “I think when things get tough, I'm just a little bit soft. I mean, I've got experience, but it ultimately comes down to just laying it all out there and competing for a long time. I didn't do that today at all.”

2013 Wimbledon champion Murray will next face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who advance after Frenchman Richard Gasquet was forced to retire from their fourth-round match down 4-2 due to a back injury.

• 22-year-old Lucas Pouille advanced to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, beating Bernard Tomic 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 on Monday.

“Before the tournament, was to win one match on grass,” Pouille said of his previous record before Wimbledon. “Now, of course, I'm very happy, very emotional with the win today. I try to recover as good as possible for Wednesday. It will be my first day off tomorrow, so it will be good.”

• In the final match of the day, Jiri Vesely saved five match points to take a fourth set tiebreaker 11-9 and level the match at two sets all. The match was suspended for darkess and will resume tomorrow.

More results: Yaroslava Shvedova d. Lucie Safarova 6-2, 6-4; Elena Vesnina d. Ekaterina Makarova 5-7, 6-1, 9-7
