3,021 heads of cattle were smuggled in 2014, while the number has gone up to 17,152 till September 20 this year.
Kozhikode: City Corporation authorities on Tuesday will conduct the first auctioning of the cattle captured from the city limits.
The civic body has issued notices about the auctioning of four roaming cattle that were sized form the city limits by a squad of health inspectors.
The civic body had captured 11 cattle, including buffaloes, after opening a temporary cattle shed adjacent to the existing corporation office on the beach.

The civic body formed the squad a week ago following complaints by the public about the difficulty faced by road users due to the roaming of cattle. The squad, headed by the health inspector, picked up roaming cattle from Palayam, SM Street, Kottaparamba Women and Child Hospital and Link road.
According to corporation health officials, owners of seven cattle have taken their pet animals home after remitting fine. The civic body so far collected a sum of Rs 20,300 as fine from cattle owners.
Corporation health standing committee chairman K V Baburaj said, "Considering the need, two more special squads will be deployed in the corporation limits to capture roaming cattle on the basis of information passed by the public. The squad will cover the entire corporation limits,'' he said.
