Varanasi: Relishing the life of a normal human being, this four-legged creature might come across as terrifying but is actually an intrepid wayfarer who can be seen sipping 'aam panna' at makeshift kiosks, relaxing atop motorbikes or enjoying sumptuous meals at restaurants in the city.
Be it morning or busy afternoon, one can spot this langoor (baboon) sauntering down the stretch of road from Rathyatra to Lanka.
The people of these localities are acquainted with him and his antics. The residents of Mehmoorganj and Sigra, especially women used to be terrified initially. However, his presence no longer terrifies anyone.
Recently, the gutsy and indomitable langoor strode across the road and marched inside a prominent south Indian restaurant in Bhelupur. After cautiously looking at both the sides and observing people gazing at him with astonishment, the langoor climbed atop the table and started gobbling down somebody else's platter.
Some of those present captured him in their smartphones and the photo went viral within minutes with people circulating it on social media platforms. "At first, we got worried as so many people were inside the restaurant. But, without harming anyone he quietly ate the dosa, loitered around for a bit and left," said the owner of the restaurant.
Earlier in May, he (langoor) was spotted at a motorcycle showroom in Sigra, where like any other bike lover, he was trying his hands on different bikes displayed inside the showroom. "He is really fond of motorbikes. This was his third visit to the showroom and the employees simply step aside to watch his antics," its said owner said.
A betel shop owner at Mehmoorganj remembers the langoor for the his Banarasi andaaz (style).
"The customers at my shop were busy talking when out of nowhere he climbed up the kiosk and stuffed Banarasi paan inside his mouth. When some youngsters wielded their cell phones to take a snapshot, he snapped and destroyed betel leaves," the paan-wallah recalled.
