YANGON, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's second largest city of Mandalay will implement a waste water treatment plan which will start this fiscal year and take seven years to complete, official report said on Monday.
The plan will be launched with a loan of 70 trillion kyats (60 million U.S. dollars) from the Asia Development Bank (ADB), the Mandalay City Development Committee was quoted as saying.
According to the committee, rain water and household waste water will be collected before it enters surrounding rivers and the plan is to reduce the volume of waste being polluted into the Ayeyawaddy River, purifying sewage water and using the left over-sediment to create electricity.
Meanwhile, a Mandalay urban development project is also reportedly being implemented in a bid to further develop the city by following the model of similar development in other countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The development project in Shankalay Kyun, Amarapura Township, Mandalay Region will be undertaken by the Mandalay Business Capital City Development Company under an agreement signed with the Mandalay City Development Committee in March.
Aimed at providing better shelters to the people in project area without displacement, the project is located at a land plot of more than 2,000 acres (810 hectares) including reclaimed fertile lands from swampy areas near the Ayeyawaddy River.
The project covers construction of residential apartments, hospitals, hotels and shopping as well as an information center to be opened for reimbursing compensation in exchange of plots of land after completion of the project.
