Arnab Goswami is one of the few journalists who’s not part of social media, stays away from Twitter but for once he decided to become part of the conversation that erupted after his interview with PM Modi.
The interaction elicited quite a reaction with Kapil Sibal wondering if the PM would take interviews from ‘our journalists’, while fellow journos trashing his sudden mellow avatar. Fellow journalist Sagarika Ghose had tweeted: “Dear @PMOIndia pls hold an open press conference rather than bestow favours on individual journalists. Let there be free and fair exchange.”

In a piece titled Arnab Answers The Trolls on Business World, Arnab hit out at all those who were questioning his credentials in a hard-hitting piece. He also hit out at those who questioned him, saying that he worked far away from the ‘machinations and intrigue of Luyten’s journalism’, and he found the outrage that he got the interview amusing. Hitting out at a ‘has-been anchor who desperately lobbies for an opportunity to be invited on NewsHour debates’.

He wrote: “Embarrassed by the angry reactions, she deleted the tweet later. I thought her question was intellectually disjointed. Across the world, the first exclusive interviews are given to anchors and channels who command viewership. Not to those who nobody watches. Period.”

Then describing his perceived lack of aggressiveness he wrote: “Finally, there were some ridiculous questions on my tone. Was I soft? Why didn’t I raise my voice like on NewsHour? Why did I keep referring to the Prime Minister as “Mr Prime Minister”? Three answers should silence this industry that obsesses about me. First, I used the same tone with Rahul Gandhi. If this industry is disappointed with how he let them down, it’s not my problem. Second, Frankly Speaking is an interview and The NewsHour is a debate, both are therefore different styles and formats. And finally, “Mr Prime Minister” is the most appropriate reference point when you are speaking to the Prime Minister. “

He signed off saying that in the end everyone would be judged by what they do, not how elegantly they troll on social media. "Eventually, all of us will be judged by what we do. Not by how elegantly we troll on social media and its satellites," he wrote.

This led to quite a flutter on Twitter with trolls trending a hashtag #ArnabSlapsSagarika. This led many Twitter users to urge Rajdeep Sardesai, Sagarika Ghose’s journalist husband, to reply to which Rajdeep said: “Not at all. They and their glorified hero have revealed their mindset. Let them continue.”
