Here's green material for builders
Mysuru: Hundreds of citizens visited the eco-friendly exhibition of construction and interior products, organized by the Builders Association of India (BAI) on Friday.
More than 40 stalls by various companies displayed eco-friendly material at the three-day exhibition 'My Green 2016' in the city. CFTRI former director V Prakash, who inaugurated the expo, said people should take up green initiatives to save nature.
Only when there is a good environment can people grow good crops, he added.
Expressing his displeasure over food wastage, Prakash said in countries like India, there is loss from the farm to the consumer, whereas in the western world, wastage of food is higher. In fact, 70% of food is wasted and about 30% lost due to bad storage infrastructure.
He stressed the need to minimize the use of water and save energy by taking up zero-energy and eco-friendly initiatives in household activities, using public transport to save natural resource, and minimal use of air-conditioners and lights, as part of the eco-friendly initiative, Prakash said.
While the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology presented biofuel cell, the Indian Institute of Science displayed low carbon material and building systems, and rainwater harvesting. Private companies like Unitech Solar Solutions exhibited solar lights, UPS and other infrastructure, Srikara Energy Solutions displayed solar use for agriculture. Women self-help group from Mysuru Shobha Balaga explained details of financial investment in dairy farming.

This wood has plastic
Private company E3 Wood from Bengaluru displayed an alternative for wood -- modified material which looks like wood, and is extensively used in house construction by builders.
Modified wood, which is an eco-friendly alternative for wood, is a mixture of waste wood and plastic. Nearly 70% of natural waste wood and leaf is mixed with 30% plastic waste. It is also cheaper than normal wood.
Company CEO Ganesh M told TOI that alternative and nature-friendly raw material for construction work and interior design are available. Its manufacturing process is eco-friendly because it uses only waste wood and waste plastic, the final product is recyclable, water and weather resistant, and easy to work with for carpenters, he added.
