Calicut varsity to move HC to expedite Arabic College case

Sanctioning Of Courses Under Univ Was Challenged In 2014
Calicut varsity to move HC to expedite Arabic College case
Kozhikode: The Calicut University will approach the high court seeking to expedite the legal procedures in the case challenging the sanctioning of courses in nine Arabic colleges under the varsity.
Students who had enrolled for the newly introduced arts and commerce courses in Arabic colleges in 2014 are facing an uncertain future after a case was filed in the HC the same year challenging the government order sanctioning the courses.

Vice-chancellor K Mohammed Basheer said he has asked the varsity's standing counsel in the HC to explore legal options to expedite the case. "We will try to expedite the case so that the students enrolled in the courses do not suffer," the vice-chancellor said.
The varsity has not received the assent from the chancellor for the statute amendment proposal passed by the senate in this regard.
Meanwhile, varsity authorities said they had granted temporary affiliation to new courses in 2014, subject to the fulfilment of conditions for affiliations as per act and statutes and amendment of statutes. Accordingly, the varsity senate resolved to pass the statute amendment on December 29, 2014, and the university had forwarded the statute amendment proposal to the chancellor for getting the assent.
"The varsity had submitted the proposals to the chancellor after completing the procedures. Cases were filed in the high court against sanctioning of new courses in Arabic colleges. As the cases are pending before the HC, any advancement in this direction would be sub-judice. Hence, the university is waiting for the final decision from the HC in this regard," a varsity official said.
The upgrading of Arabic colleges required an amendment of the CU statutes as under the existing statutes an 'oriental title college' can impart instruction for titles in oriental studies only and not in other subjects.
The varsity syndicate had in its last meeting decided to put on hold the fresh applications received from Arabic colleges for new courses till the completion of the statute amendment process.
