National Geographic travel photography contest winners unveiled

A photograph of a horseman in Inner Mongolia taken by Anthony Lau of Hong Kong has won the 2016 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year Contest. "The snow was getting heavier, the wind was getting stronger, the morning snow was getting thinner and the light was moving away from its optimal position,” Lau said. “I knew I only had a couple of shots to get the best out of this encounter. With a bit of luck, one of my final attempts managed to capture the moment when one of the riders charged out from the morning mist along with his horses.”
The winning images were selected from three categories: People, Cities and Nature. Hiroki Inoue won first place for Nature with this photo of two foxes running through snow in Biei, Hokkaido, Japan, titled "Wherever you go, I will follow you!"
First place in the Cities category went to Takashi Nakagawa. The winning image captures a moment of reflection at the Ben Youssef madrasa in Marrakesh, Morocco.
The Brazilian Pantanal along the Rio Negrinho was the location for this jaw-dropping moment. "The whole thing lasted only a fraction of a moment," said photographer Massimiliano Bencivenni who won second place in the Nature category.
Second Place in the People category went to Yasmin Mund for an image titled Rooftop Dreams, Varanasi. Taken at 5:30 on the rooftop of a guest house, Mund's image shows families sleeping in the summer heat at sunrise.
This photo of school dormitories was taken in Guangzhou, Guangdong Sheng, China, by Wing Ka H and won second place in the Cities category.
Third place in Nature went to Victor Lima for this night time shot of the Lagunas Baltinache in the Atacama Desert, Chile.
A women in a remote village in Himachal Pradesh, India, carries fire wood in Mattia Passarini. The photo was awarded third place in the People category.
Jeremy Tan won third place in the Cities category for this striking image of lightning appearing to strike Komtar Tower in George Town, the capital of Penang state in Malaysia, during a thunderstorm.
Dotan Saguy received an Honourable Mention for a photo of bodybuilders in action at Muscle Beach Gym in Venice Beach, California. The shot was submitted in the People category.
Kathleen Dolmatch's shot of Central Park, New York, was taken from a helicopter and was also awarded an Honourable Mention in the Cities category.
And last but not least, a Nature category Honorable Mention went to John Rollins for this photo of polar bears in the Davis Strait off the coast of Baffin Island.
