The curious case of the terrorist Tapir

Ostrich run: Chickaboo safe and sound at the farm in Semenyih, Selangor after its escapade. Its desperate dash for deliverance had now made it a symbol of fearlessness, a legend whose status was evolving towards near-myth.

“MY life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue,” observed Carole King in her immortal 1971 album Tapestry.

But what was observed last week in the island-republic of Singapore was neither wealthy nor noble. It was more like a tapirstry, a Malayan tapir spotted grumpily trotting alongside a metal fence in Changi in the wee hours of a Friday morning made too exciting for the citizen who spotted it because he thought it was an alien from outer space.
