The State government has granted Rs. 1 crore to Hampi University to set up a Jain Study Centre at Shravanabelagola in Channarayapatna taluk. A preliminary meeting to start work on the Centre was held in the Jain Mutt in Shravanabelagola on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Charukeerti Bhattaraka Swami of Jain Mutt said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced the provision of funds to set up a Jain Study Centre in Shravanabelagola. The government had provided Rs. 1 crore to Hampi University to set up the centre.

“The Centre will help those scholars and students who come from different places to study Jain literature and philosophy,” he said.

Dr. Mallika Ghanti, the vice-chancellor, said the Centre would hold seminars and workshops on Jain philosophy and literature. “There is a need for a detailed study on Jain inscriptions. The Centre will help scholars and students in old Mysore area,” she said.

The University will bring a few valuable works on Jain literature and philosophy by the Mahamastakabhisheka to be held in February 2018. The Centre would have one director, four teaching staff and five research assistants, besides supporting non-teaching staff. In the first year, 40 students would be admitted, the VC said.
