MOSCOW – Russia's President Vladimir Putin is visiting Finland on his first trip to the European Union since the British vote to leave the bloc.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto hosted Putin for Friday's talks at his summer residence in southwestern Finland. The negotiations are expected to focus on bilateral ties and security issues amid tensions over Ukraine.

Putin's visit comes as the EU extended sanctions against Russia until February.

The U.S. and the EU imposed the sanctions in response to Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and support for insurgents in eastern Ukraine. They made lifting the sanctions contingent on the progress of a 2015 peace agreement for eastern Ukraine, which has stalled.

Finland is not a NATO member but has actively engaged with the alliance, which holds a summit next week.
